Olive oil is among the most adulterated food products globally. Common fraud includes blending with cheaper seed oils and mislabeling country of origin. USDA NOP compliance requires verifiable chain of custody from certified operations.

The 2017 Turkish grain import fraud — where millions of pounds of conventional grain were sold as organic — exposed systemic vulnerabilities in bulk commodity supply chains. Domestic sourcing and known certifiers reduce but do not eliminate risk.

Spices face documented adulteration risks including lead contamination in turmeric, conventional product relabeled as organic, and complex multi-country supply chains that resist traceability. The SOE Rule's import certificate requirements address some but not all vulnerabilities.

Organic seed certification ensures seeds are produced without prohibited substances. For producers transitioning to organic, sourcing certified seed stock is a foundational compliance requirement under NOP §205.204.

Non-food organic products fall under the same NOP certification framework but receive less scrutiny from enforcement. Verification confirms the certifying agent and operation status are current.
